This study aimed to characterize adolescents who have acquired the immunodeficiency syndrome, assistedin a teaching hospital in southern Brazil, according to their history and clinical course. It is a quantitative and documentaryresearch, of a descriptive approach. It had as inclusion criteria the aged from 10-19 years, in antiretroviral treatment,totaling 39 patient records. Data collection was performed after the approval by the Ethics in Research Committee andusing a proper form. Data were treated statistically by Statistica Analysis System. The results showed clinical fragility dueto immunological impairment, vulnerability to opportunistic diseases, the need for permanent clinical and laboratoryfollow up, adherence to the treatment, adverse effects and treatment failure. From these results, the commitment to meetthe specific demands of HIV status and stage of growth and development of their own adolescence is pointed out.Downloads
