Abstract

This is a descriptive exploratory study about experiences of patients on hemodialysis. It sought to understand
the meaning of hemodialysis and the impact of this therapeutic modality for the patients. Were carried out semi-structured
interviews with four patients and we indentified five themes, wich were organizated according to Bardin’s content analysis.
The disease and hemodialysis can affect both the perception and behavior regarding the social relations of the patient.
Various existential projects tend to be canceled or modified by the situation experienced. Trust in the divine power and the
presence of significant others emerged in a constructive manner in the speech of patients as a possibility of strengthening
and resilience. In addition, the care for these people must be performed in a consistent, responsible and humane manner,
and directed to their uniqueness.
