Risks In Interorganizational Relationships And Mitigation Mechanisms: A Literature Review

Interorganizational risks refer to threats that arise in relationships between organizations and that require responses delivered through risk‑mitigation mechanisms. From this perspective, the objective of this study is to analyze interorganizational risks and the risk‑mitigation mechanisms most frequently addressed in studies on interorganizational relationships. The study adopts a qualitative approach and, to generate knowledge on the topic, employed the constructivist intervention instrument ProKnow‑C for the selection and analysis of a bibliographic portfolio (BP). Seventy‑one studies related to interorganizational risks were identified in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Internal interorganizational risks were the most frequent in the studies, especially available‑capacity risks, which appeared in 70.4% of the BP studies. Among the BP studies, 38 presented risk‑mitigation mechanisms, with seven mechanisms most frequently evidenced among the 34 identified. The use of software, algorithms, and mathematical models to mitigate risks was the most prevalent mechanism, appearing in seven BP studies. It is concluded that the results reveal the investigated topic to be emerging, and that more research on interorganizational risks—particularly those external to the organization—is needed, along with taxonomies for classifying and categorizing risk‑mitigation mechanisms. The contributions of this study lie in identifying the need for future research to develop robust classifications of mitigation mechanisms, which are relevant to the theoretical and strategic advancement of interorganizational management.
