Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand the agricultural and extractive practices that are developed by family farming to enable productive activities and reproduction of their living conditions in the Brazilian semiarid region. To that end, systematization and analysis of the Agricultural Census 2017 conducted by IBGE was carried out to identify social, productive and environmental characteristics in family farming establishments in the semiarid territory. Despite the potential of this model of agriculture it appears that its weaknesses and shortcomings express historical structural inheritances that pressure to intensify the use of natural resources to which they have access. Thus, great challenges remain for an agroecological transition in family farming establishments, which requires structural changes in public policies for regional development.
