Urban parks as catalysts for economic growth: discussing insights from South American metropolises

Urban parks are increasingly recognised as pivotal assets in sustainable urban development, addressing the intertwined challenges of environmental degradation, social inequality, and economic stagnation. This study explores their multifaceted roles, focusing on their contributions to economic growth, recreation, cultural enrichment, and community engagement. Using insights from field observations in Lima, São Paulo, and Santiago de Chile, alongside international case studies, the analysis highlights how urban parks enhance property values, stimulate entrepreneurship, and foster tourism, while integrating circular
economy principles and modern technologies. The research also examines challenges such as accessibility barriers, social inequality, and over-commercialisation, emphasising the need for balanced policies to preserve the intrinsic purpose of parks as inclusive, ecological, and cultural spaces. By demonstrating the transformative potential of urban parks, the discussion advocates for their strategic integration into urban planning as engines of sustainable development, community well-being, and long-term economic revitalisation.
