Abstract

The war between the Greeks and the Trojans, narrated by Homer, was a very well-known subject by the Elizabethans. Considering themselves descendants from the Trojans, and influenced by Latin authors who voiced their prejudices against the Greeks, these were gradually seen from a negative point of view by Shakespeare’s contemporaries. This essay focuses on two feminine figures in the Homeric epic poem, the Trojan Hecuba and the Greek Helen, suggesting that their presence in the Shakespearean discourse, marked by the bias of  the age, is important for the reading
