Abstract

This study had as its general goal to assess restrictions and possibilities for family members to stay at an open/humanized ICU from a private hospital in the south of Brazil. It is a descriptive study whose data collection was carried out by means of a questionnaire answered by nursing staff and family members during April/2007. Results evidenced family members’ satisfaction although lack of comfort was the main setback pointed out by them. Even recognizing patients’ benefits, caregivers point out, as major difficulties, lack of infrastructure and unpreparedness to cope with families. The study enabled to view the necessary adjustments to keep that proposal, including caregivers’ awareness and proper number of professionals.
