Problematic Smartphone Use Among Academic of Accounting Sciences Course

The rapid increase in the number of smartphone users has raised concern about the behavioral and psychological effects of its misuse, especially among university academics. This study aims to verify whether the use of smartphones by students of the Accounting Sciences course influences procrastination and satisfaction with life. Descriptive research was carried out based on a survey, with a sample of 171 students from several Brazilian universities. To test the hypotheses, Structural Equation Modeling was used, using the Partial Least Squares algorithm (PLS-SEM). The survey results indicated that the use of smartphone leads students to procrastinate their academic activities. In addition, it was identified that the use of smartphone can negatively affect the satisfaction with the lives of students in the Accounting course. It is concluded based on the results that the use of smartphone has a problematic effect on students of the Accounting course, as it leads to academic procrastination and a low satisfaction with life. The results of the study help professors and students to reflect on the negative results of using a smartphone, not only with the course activities, but also on personal satisfaction and happiness.
