Abstract

Democratic regimes have better environmental performance? Our hypothesis is that the level of democracy of regimes has a positive and significant effect on environmental performance. To test it, we used descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and analysis of simple and multiple linear regression. The results suggest that: 1) the index of democracy explains about 45% of the variance of environmental performance index of countries and 2) democracies have higher average environmental performance, 3) the control variables do not override the effect of democracy index on environmental performance.
