Abstract

This article discusses the environmental issue from the social conflict perspective. Here, social strug-gles involving environmental issues are considered as moments in which an “environmental field” is built, where the conditions for material and symbolical appropriation of a territorial resource base are at stake. The “environmental field” notion conceived as a field of forces attempts to express the relational dynamics of the social world, where individuals and social groups that occupy different positions in a social space made up of relationships come into disagreements that challenge the material and symboli-cal distribution of power. In this way, environmental conflicts establish the environment as a category around which social practices are classified according to different legitimacy levels.
