An overview of Brazilian scientific production on climate denial and disinformation

The impacts of the climate crisis rank among the most severe and urgent global risks of our time. However, the gravity of this scenario has been systematically obscured by the deliberate spread of disinformation, which undermines public engagement and weakens collective efforts aimed at formulating and implementing effective solutions. In this context, this article aims to identify and analyze Brazilian scientific production on climate denial and disinformation through an integrative systematic literature review conducted via the CAPES journal portal and the SciELO Brazil database, covering the period from 2018 to 2024. The findings indicate that the term climate denial was widely used and generally addressed as a subset of scientific denialism. The phenomenon was predominantly understood as a political-ideological expression, linked to neoliberal interests and deliberate strategies to obstruct public awareness of the effects of the climate crisis and the measures necessary to mitigate them. The findings highlight the urgent need for interdisciplinary approaches that integrate critical science education, media literacy, regulation of information technologies, strengthening of environmental governance, and the valuing of pluralistic and emancipatory forms of knowledge, in order to confront the political, cognitive, and communicational conflicts that permeate this debate. By mapping and systematizing this body of research, this study seeks to contribute to the strengthening of academic and institutional responses to the structural impacts of climate denial and disinformation in Brazil.
