Abstract

This article deals with the opposition between mass and count nouns. We argue in defense of the lexical/ stem base for such distinction, in the basis of how pervasive it is through all structural levels of nominal phrases.  We go through Brazilian Portuguese data, examining Bare Nouns, Definite Descriptions and Quantified Phrases. Regardless of the structural complexity of the Nominal Phrase, the distributions facts observed could not be explained without the distinction between mass and count.
