Abstract

Qualitative research with a phenomenological motivation based on Heidegger, trying to apprehend the meaning of caring and being cared by the mentally ill and their families. By means of unveiling and apprehending the meanings attributed by these people to the ways of caring, we have been allowed to rethink the way we deliver care and what we need to change in order to meet the necessities of the mentally ill and their families facing the reality of the mental disorder. It was possible to understand the necessity of families being cared mainly on the onset of the disease. The mentally ill and their families expressed anguish and sadness facing the admittance to a psychiatric hospital, specially by the way care is rendered in these institutions, considering they do not foster rehabilitation.
