Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to describe the experience of pregnant women in the prison system, between August
and September 2011. Semi-structured interviews were held with 9 women; content analysis was used, from which a central category
emerged – The experience of women in prison during the gestational period and the three thematic categories; this excerpt presents
The absence of health care for the imprisoned pregnant woman. The study revealed that the situation lived through and experienced
by the pregnant women held in the Prison System is delicate, given that the institution has no health service with doctors or nurses
to monitor these women.
