This is a descriptive exploratory research with a qualitative approach objectifying to analyze obstetricians view on the performance of the Obstetric Nurses in an Obstetric Center of a teaching hospital in the city of Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The data were collected through a non- structured interview with one specific question. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and grouped in three categories: The recognition of the importance of the Obstetric Nurse to the health team; The difficulty in defining roles and the obstetric nurse/mid-wifes legal responsibility. Physicans questioning on mid-wives practice. The results were: lack of knowledge on the legislation that backs up mid-wives practice, therefore generating a difficulty in role definition; obstetric nurses/mid wives are judged dispensable, having a supporting role in care rendering.
