Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the use among farmers of medicinal plants with anti-oxidant properties. It is a descriptive study in which 18 farmers (specialising in ecological farming) from the South Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul participated. A total of 163 ethnobotanicals was identified of which 23 had anti-oxidant properties. Plants were accessed close to residences and their use derived from folk knowledge, generally passed from generation to generation. Knowledge of the scientific principles behind the plants’ health benefits can contribute to bringing the nurse closer to communities which use plants for this purpose, promoting health and quality of life, as well as encouraging exchanges between scientific knowledge and folk knowledge.
