This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the association of sociodemographic variables with cognitive impairment. It is a cross-sectional study that used both the modified version of the MMSE and a form for collecting demographic data. Study participants were 503 senior citizens in the Family Health Teams of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, between August 2007 and February 2008, with a mean age of 72.63 years, with 156 (31%) men and 347 ( 69%) women. The assessment of reliability by Cronbach’s alpha result was 0.80, showing that the instrument is reliable for this sample application. Among these variables, gender and age had significant influence on the result of mental state. The results show indicators for discussion, policy development assistance to the elderly and development of Mental Health Programs.
