Abstract

The purpose of the study was to describe the activities performed by a bedside nurse in an Adult Care
Emergency Service in an University Hospital to identify and to describe the caring activities performed by the nurse. This
is a descriptive study, with non-participant observation, developed during a month in the morning period. The results
indicate that the assistant nurse uses 48% of the time observed for management activities, what results in a shortened-time
for the development of other activities, especially those related to caring. The technical procedures that demanded more
time were: peripheral venous access puncture, dressing changes and indwelling urinary catheterization. In conclusion, the
work of the bedside nurse was directly influenced by the care demand, and her activities are primarily focused on the
management, removing her from the direct patient care.
