The objectives of this qualitative study were to assess the fathers’ experience concerning the labor and
childbirth of their partners/wives. The subjects of the study were partners/husbands who were present at their child’s
birth in a teaching hospital in Curitiba – PR, from September to October 2006. Data were collected through semi-structured
interviews. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis as described by Bardin (1979). It was found that the
father’s participation in his partner’s/wife’s labor and childbirth is extremely beneficial for the family as a whole, strengthening
the family bond. The man’s participation in the childbirth process is something desired by both men and women in our
current society.
