Abstract

People are not usually prepared to be admitted to an Intensive Care Unit. Most of the time, this is an

unexpected situation, taking people to a complex environment, where everything is strange to them. The study tries to

identify stressors in patients that have been admitted to an ICU of a big hospital. Fifteen (15) patients participated in this

qualitative, descriptive research study. Data collection was carried out by means of an open interview, after the participant’s

discharge of the unit as well as recorded observation in a field diary. Data treatment followed the steps of thematic analysis

and resulted in the structuring of an analytic category that addresses environmental stressors, team stressors and physical

stress-generating factors. The results evidence that most of the identified stresses can be controlled by the team, and

they may interfere in patients’ recovery.
