Performance and patient safety metrics
a phenomenological approach in orthopedic wards

Objective: To understand how clinical nurses perceive and interpret the use of performance metrics in promoting patient safety in orthopedic wards.
Method: A qualitative phenomenological study grounded in Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and guided by Amedeo Giorgi. Thirteen nurses from the adult inpatient unit of a high-complexity federal hospital participated. Data were collected through phenomenological interviews and analyzed according to the four stages of the method, preserving the lived meaning of the experience.
Results: Two essential categories emerged: the awakening of embodied safety and the operative intentionality of performance metrics within the inpatient unit setting. The findings reveal that patient safety is expressed in the nurse’s embodied self, whose perception, habitual body, and sensitivity guide prudent actions beyond normative prescriptions.
Final Considerations: When metrics are incorporated into the professional way of being, they facilitate safe practice by articulating indicators, lived experience, and clinical judgment to consolidate qualified care.
