Contribution to the Circulation of RMB in the BRI

Abstract

The present study questions the potential contribution of trade in highly technological Chinese products, specifically machinery and electronics, to the increased circulation of Renminbi (RMB) within the corridors of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The hypothesis is that the trade of these products stimulates the circulation of the Chinese currency in the region. To do so, the analysis focuses on four states: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. This exploratory study employs data and official reports from international organizations along with a literature review. Indications were found that intra-BRI trade, in expansion, provides an appropriate space for the increased use of RMB outside of China. However, the difficulty of accessing data and its dispersion pose challenges for future studies on the topic.
