Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the central concepts of the theory of Basic Human Needs with the
concepts present in a nursing manual of a hospital which adopts this theory as a guide to the systematized assistance. The
study included a literature review as well as a documental research, and it was carried out in a general hospital in Paraná,
Brazil. The data collection instrument was based on the concepts of the referred theory. The data collected in the nursing
manual was analyzed checking for concordance with the terms considered as essential to the definition of each concept.
The analysis demonstrated that the institutional document was in accordance with the adopted theory: nursing, human
being, environment, health/disease, Basic Human Needs, assistance and care. We concluded that the guiding theory was
well represented in the initial proposal for the assistance institution model, although this statement is not reflected in
practice.
