Abstract

The management of pastures used
by horses is very complex. Many factors as soil,
forages, animals, weather and other variables are
included, and the grazing behavior by horses is
related with all the system parts. The knowledge of
this relation is a great challenge, but it is necessary
to find a way to guide the pasture management to
horses. Foraging horse’s process can be divided
into hierarchy levels: landscape, plant community,
patch, feeding station, until the plant. Foraging
horses supplies nutrients and they remain healthy
and fitness, due their anatomic and physiologic
characteristics. Major understanding about this
livestock system (pasture – environment – horses)
increases the pasture utilization as nutrients source
to horses. This review paper includes information
about complex factors influencing ingestive behavior
of horses in pasture.
