The joint custody of children has been subject of much discussion in academia as well as in society at large. This study aims to identify the main themes studied about the joint arrangement, and to describe the results of these investigations as well. To do so, a systematic review of the topic was carried out, considering the publications between 1990 and 2016. Through the search in the bases PsycINFO, SciELO and PePSIC, with reference to “guarda compartilhada” and “joint custody” descriptors, 219 articles were identified, which were reduced to 45, considering the existence of duplicate studies and the relevance of each to the outlined goal. The selected articles were fully read and later submitted to a content analysis. This analysis was made up of five thematic categories. The studies indicated that there are benefits of the arrangement for the family system, especially for the children, derived from their greater coexistence with both parents. Difficulties associated with the arrangement were identified, especially regarding the conflict between the parental pair and the implications of gender relations in this process. Joint custody is understood as an important alternative, although articles suggest that there is no ideal custody model, and that the particularities of each context and each family, their resources and interests, are more relevant than the arrangement itself.
