The present paper aims at understanding and exploring the Historical Comparative Methodology (HCM) as an appropriate method for the Social Sciences in general and for International Relations, in particular. In order to do so, the study will address the HCM and demonstrate its main characteristics, fit for qualitative studies in small-n researches. Process-tracing will be also discussed as complementary tool for the HCM, because it helps the researcher to infer better causality to the phenomena. For a better understanding of the method, Theda Skocpol’s work will be discussed, as an example of the HCM and process-tracing in qualitative research and as a theoretical construction. A Venn diagram will be proposed for her research, with the objective of demonstrating the utilization of the HCM and process-tracing.
