An analysis of Unasur's action in combating organized crime and the illegal trade of firearms

Abstract

This article analyzes how the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) acted in the fight against organized crime and the illicit trade in firearms. One of UNASUR's objectives was to combat transnational crimes and, recognizing its importance, it implemented sectorial councils in its institutional structure that dealt with the coordination of actions against transnational organized crime. To this target, the gradual existence of a process of consolidation of illicit trafficking in firearms in the South American continent was verified and, at the same time, actions implemented by UNASUR on the subject were observed. In this context, we evaluated the institution's effectiveness in the performance on the illicit trade in firearms, as well as the challenges faced during the period of decline in the institution's functioning.
