This is a study that portrays the dynamics of the aid relationship between a postgraduate/nurse of Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing/USP and the alcoholic clients, who attend the activities of the CEPRAL/UFRJ (Study Centre for Alcoholism Rehabilitation and Prevention). It was objectified to verify the adequacy of therapeutic communication techniques and to point out modifications brought about by the interviewed or by the interviewer along the aid relationship. The results indicate the importance of technical knowledge and the willingness to evaluate such communication techniques aiming at the therapeutic aid in nursing care.
