Abstract

This descriptive exploratory study, qualitative approach, objectified to investigate undergraduates, attending the seventh semester of the Nursing course in a public university, and their perception on their skills to recognize and deliver care to abused children and teenagers. Data collection was effected by means of a semi-structured, recorded and transcribed interview. It complied with Resolution 196/96 on research with human beings. Content analysis was adopted for the technical exam. Half of the twenty respondents reported unprepared to identify abuse situations, but they recognized Nursing Consultation as a diagnostic way and described negligence as abuse. They report their action taking but do not realize the need for case follow-up which makes hard the evaluation of their action effectiveness. They recommend child and familys psychological treatment to disrupt the abuse cycle and family/ school integration as an option to address the problem.
