Abstract

This study aimed to get to know which parameters have been used to dimension nursing staff, as well as to
identify which facilities and challenges nurses have faced in this context. We carried out an exploratory-descriptive
qualitative study. Content analysis was applied. The following dimensioning parameters were evidenced: mean of
permanence, unit characteristic, bed occupation rate, nursing care model, type of clients, type of health insurance, nursing
team and unit team composition, work hours, absenteeism and Patient Classification System. The importance of the
relationship with the institutional board and greater involvement of other nurses stood out as dimensioning facilities.
Challenges included human resource policy itself, nurses’ low decision power about staff hiring and difficulties related to
the calculation itself and staff overturn.
