This exploratory study of a bibliographical nature aimed to check and analyse literature production on the subject of alcohol use among university and high school students, published in the Annals of the Brazilian Congresses on Nursing (Os Anais dos Congressos Brasileiros de Enfermagem) in the period from 1998 to 2008.The search terms were ‘alcohol’ ‘alcoholism’ and ‘psychoactive substances’; the sample was made up of 18 abstracts directly related to the terms. The data was analysed and classified according to the contents approached, and made it possible to create two thematic categories. It was shown that in recent years there has been an increase in the production of scientific literature on this theme, with publications on factors contributory to the use of alcohol, as well as outlines of its use. It was concluded that, in spite of the increase in the production of Nursing studies on the use of alcohol, matters are at an early stage, suggesting that other studies of this nature should be made.
