Objective: To evaluate risk factors for perioperative complications related to patient safety
through the use of an evaluation instrument.
Method: Cross-sectional exploratory study conducted in a hospital in the state of Ceará, from
March to April 2017.
Results: Glasgow and Aldrete-Kroulik scales not used and absence of patient identification.
In more than 69% of the sample, the consent form for surgery was not signed and the
anesthesiologist was not present during the surgical procedure. There was a statistically
significant relationship between preoperative complaints and elective and emergency
surgeries (p <0.001).
Conclusion: Several risks can lead to complications in the perioperative period, which can
be avoided if health professionals follow the World Health Organization’s patient safety
recommendations, associated with the implementation of protocols and checklists.
