Abstract

This retrospective study aimed to characterize the suicide attempts among the elderly registered between January 2004 and December 2010 in a Toxicological Care and Information Center in Paraná. The data was collected from the records of toxicological events from 66 suicide attempts; the socio-demographic and clinical variables were processed using the software Statistics 7,0®, and a Chi-squared test was applied at the 5% significance level. The suicide attempts among the elderly represented 2,47% of the total of attempts registered, and happened among individuals aged from 60 to 69, with up to eight years of education, retired, from the city of Maringá and the metropolitan region. The attempts were made with pesticides or herbicides used in agriculture or with medicines used in psychiatric treatment. It is concluded that the characterization of suicide attempts in this population permits the planning of actions for preventing this event.

Possui graduação em Psicologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Especialista em Saúde Mental. Psicóloga do Centro de Controle de Intoxicações do Hospital Universitário Regional de Maringá.

Thais Aidar de Freitas Mathias, Universidade Estadual de Maringá

Graduação em Enfermagem na Escola de Enfermagem de Ribeirão Preto-USP (1979), Mestrado (1994) e Doutorado (2002) em Saúde Pública, Faculdade de Saúde Pública-USP. Professor Associado da Universidade Estadual de Maringá-PR, graduação e Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem. Atua em Enfermagem em Saúde Pública, com ênfase em estatísticas e informações em saúde, morbidade, mortalidade infantil e materna, e ainda diagnósticos e análises da situação de saúde de grupos da população.

Magda Lúcia Félix de Oliveira, Centro de Controle de Intoxicações do Hospital Universitário Regional de Maringá

Possui graduação em Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal de Goiás (1978), mestrado em Saúde Coletiva pela Universidade Estadual de Londrina (1998) e doutorado em Saúde Coletiva pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2004). Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Tem experiência na área de Enfermagem em Saúde Publica e Enfermagem em Doenças Transmissíveis, com ênfase em Assistência Toxicológica, nos seguintes temas: intoxicação, saúde ambiental e ocupacional, família, aids e drogas de abuso, atenção às urgèncias e avaliação em saúde.
