This study contemplates the
perception of the women, who had participated of
the research, on the meaning of breast-feeding and
the interference of this meaning in the confrontation
with breast problems and its repercussion in
precocious weaning. The aim of this study was to
identify the support the women had received
(qualitatively and quantitatively) and the established
relations between the involved actors. The stories
unmask the difficulties faced for the women in this
peculiar phase and of great learning that is the
beginning of the lactation. The gotten results consider
new directions to support the breast-feeding, having
as reference the theories of the Brazilian educator
Paulo Freire.
