PERCEPTION OF NURSING UNDERGRADUATES ON ELDER CARE

Descriptive analytical study which objectified to describe and analyze the perceptions of nursing
undergraduates on Gerontology majoring. The sample encompassed 57 nursing undergraduates from Paraíba State
University (Universidade Estadual da Paraíba - UEPB). Given the content analysis, two thematic categories were selected:
the elements involved in the elder caring process (including the requirement of subjectivity and expertise, in addition to
elder social recognition); and another related to elder caring practice and knowing needed to nursing education. It is
suggested that more studies reflect on nursing curricula and discussions are carried out on elder health aiming at nursing
qualification to face the challenges of population aging.
