Although feeding is the main health factor, many hospitalized patients are malnourished or presenting
nutritional hazard. Enteral feeding is a therapeutic, low-cost, easily operationalized and highly efficient method in which
nursing plays an ultimate role. This research study objectified: to observe nursing care delivered in enteral feeding, to
investigate team knowledge on enteral feeding and elaborate educational material from the results of the former objectives.
Quantitative, descriptive field research, which used non-participant systematic observation technique with the application
of a semi-structured instrument. Observation results identified failures in communication and nursing records, tube
position and aseptic principles. It was evidenced knowledge scarcity concerning gastric stasis, assepsy, diet identification
and records. Knowledge and caring gaps on enteral feeding demand educational and concerted strategies to improve
caring as a whole.
