It is an experience account on the self-assessment process of nursing undergraduates. The discipline
portfolio was adopted as a tool to evaluate students enrolled in the discipline of Semiotechnique II of the Nursing Course
at a public university, carried out from August to December/2005 with 28 participants. From the discipline portfolio, it was
deemed interesting to present how the undergraduates used the tool to describe their knowledge, reporting their own
perception in the context of the discipline, the course and nursing. It enabled to list their knowledge and skills, perceive
their achievements and acquired values, in addition, teaching-learning process overcame knowing and doing. Thus, selfassessment
provided by the building of the discipline portfolio can be used as one of the learning tools and consequent
change in professional qualification.
