In this article I present a linguistic-discursive analysis of an institutional text –Part 2 in Section 2 of the National Curricular Directives for the ‘Letras’ Course, aiming at discussing and reflecting on the prescriptions to the education of future professional in the ‘Letras’ area from the competences posed by such a document, and also to advance in the understanding of the relationship between language and educational work. This interpretative analysis of a text about the educational work developed from the sociodiscursive interactionist perspective and the analysis procedures by Bronckart and Machado (2004) reveal that the prescriptions are textualised in a vague and atemporal way, implying a representation of an ideal professional, endowed widely and thoroughly with competences and abilities without, however, making explicit how such qualification should happen.
