Abstract

This paper presents the distribution of predicative adverbs and secondary predicates in Brazilian Portuguese. It shows that subject-oriented adverbs share with secondary predicates the feature that they can be participant-oriented, contrary to the belief that  adverbs are deemed to be exclusively event-oriented. The paper also shows the behaviour of adjectives in an adverbial use and claims, against Lobato 2005, that  this adverbial value cannot be denied. It  also claims that the common  features  to both adverbial and adjectives overlap only when they are adjunct predicates.
