Abstract

Between 1932 and 1947 the literary critic Augusto Meyer published four versions of a text about Dostoevsky. The modifications ranged from decisive changes in specific sentences to the construction of new sections. The author was trying to get rid little by little of fin-de-siècle criticism, which was built upon the paradigm elaborated by the French essayist Melchior de Vogüé (author of seminal studies on the Russian novel). At the same time such modifications threw light on Meyers innovative interpretation of Machado de Assis.
