Abstract

The Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988 allowed the remaining quilombolas communities (Brazilian maroon settlements) to claim the right of land property in which they live, assuring the preservation of their traditions and customs that form their territory and ethnical identity. The process is done through their self-declaration as a Remaining Quilombola Community – RQC. This paper shows the results of a study over the Remaining Quilombola Community of Restinga, located in the city of Lapa, PR, Brazil. The objective was to identify the persisting tensions in the culture maintenance of this community, using as a basis the concepts of “iconography” and “circulations”, both developed by the geographer Jean Gottmann (1915 – 1994). In the development of this research, a survey was done over the characteristics and existing traditions that identify it as a remaining quilombola settlement, and which characteristics and traditions have been preserved and disseminated within and outside the community. This allowed identifying the conflicts between the quilombola identity (iconography) and the external influences (circulations)
