Abstract
This paper studies the dynamics of the employment in the counties of the Metropolitan Regions of Porto Alegre from 1990 to 2000. The industrial jobs are moving from Porto Alegre and its neighbor counties to the regional periphery and to the others regions. This is due to the external diseconomies of the central area (lack of space, high rents and salaries). This is true specially for electric and communication materials, transportation materials, wood and furniture, textiles and footwear. The growth of employment in the services did not avoid the fall of total employment in the majority of the counties.
