Abstract
This paper synthesizes some of the main characteristics and structural changes that took place in the international exchange market in the last decade. Its aim is to show how the same causes that made the international amount of resources circulating daily in that market increase significantly in the last ten years, may have also some responsibility for the periods of exchange volatility and disarray, and for the increased frequency of exchange crises in the 1990s.
