CHARACTERIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS BY MEMBERS OF MOTHERS' CLUBS IN REALEZA, STATE OF PARANÁ

Abstract

The goal of this research was to understand the characterization and use of medicinal plants by women in the municipality of Realeza, state of Paraná. It highlighted the role of these plants as therapeutic alternatives, as well as the associated benefits and risks. The study sought to identify the types of plants used, their preparation methods, sources of knowledge, and perceived benefits or adverse effects. A qualitative methodology was adopted, based on administering semi-structured questionnaires to 28 women in two mothers' clubs located in different neighborhoods. The main results showed that all of the participants use medicinal plants daily, and most of this knowledge is passed down through the family. The most frequently cited specie was lemon balm, primarily used in teas. Many participants cultivate these plants at home and recognize the importance of careful preparation and the combination of herbs to avoid potential side effects. However, it also highlighted how common sense and the belief in the harmlessness of natural products can increase these risks. The use of medicinal plants remains a valued and living practice among the women of Realeza-PR - Brazil, combining tradition, family care, and the search for natural treatment alternatives. However, adequate guidance is needed to ensure the safe use of these plants, integrating folk wisdom with scientific information.
