Performativity and experimentalism: alternatives for a democratic project from a post-foundational perspective

Abstract

This article presents a reflection on mechanisms and conditions for a democratic regime compatible with the post-foundational proposition according to which the foundations of society should be understood as both precarious and plural. The theoretical foundations of this research are Roberto Unger’s democratic experimentalism and Judith Butler’s notion of performativity. The proposition posits that satisfying the post-foundational premise requires a model of democratic regime (i) endowed with institutional arrangements that accelerate the pace of ordinary politics and deepen the scope of its reforms and (ii) that subjects the foundations of democratic legitimacy to a continuous dispute guaranteed by the performativity of bodies in alliance. The research is exploratory and based on bibliographic review. By qualitatively correlating the fundamental concepts it analyzes, it is concluded that the combination of an experimentalist institutional arrangement and performative political action, present in the theoretical models of Unger and Butler, contributes to a democratic regime suited to the post-foundational requirement.
