Este artigo sintetiza uma série de aspectos essenciais da trajetória profissional de Sérgio Vieira de Mello, enfatizando sua paixão pelo trabalho de campo e a vida dedicada a se embrenhar nas complexidades de guerras e conflitos. Como um verdadeiro prático do trabalho humanitário, Sérgio era profundamente motivado e estava convencido da necessidade de perseguir negociações de paz com todas as partes envolvidas, independentemente de fatores culturais, posições ideológicas e políticas. Este artigo busca ainda destacar sua enorme e única contribuição para as Nações Unidas, assim como sua grandeza, frustrações e erros. Mostra a personalidade forte, e ao mesmo tempo cativante, de Vieira de Mello, sua visão estratégica e extraordinária energia para avançar nas mais diversas e desafiadoras tarefas em um mundo com cada vez mais conflitos, até sua trágica morte ao lado de outros 21 colegas em Bagdá.

ABSTRACT
This article summarizes the essential aspects of Sérgio Vieira de Mello's professional life, stressing his passion for the field work and his lifetime dedication to delve into the complexities of war and conflicts. A truly humanitarian practitioner, Sérgio was deeply motivated and convinced of the absolute need to pursue peaceful negotiations with all parties involved, regardless of cultural, ideological and political views. The article seeks to underscore his enormous and unique contribution to the United Nations, his greatness, his frustrations and errors. It portrays Vieira de Mello's strong yet charming personality, strategic vision and extraordinary energy to carry out the most diverse and challenging tasks in the midst of an ever growing conflictive world, till his tragic death along with other 21 colleagues in Bagdad.
