REVIEWING THE EDUCATIVE FOCUS IN THE PROCESS OF BREAST-FEEDING

Study of a case developed with women inscribed in the Mãe Curitibana [Curitiban Mother] Program, in the Health Unit Bom Pastor, Municipality of Curitiba, State of Paraná, Brasil. The objectives were to understand the signification of breast-feeding and to know the main determinants in the maternal lactation process existing in the reality of those women. To reach this goal a quality approach was chosen by development of workshops, enlarging the understanding of the participants about sucking as a product of social, economic, political and cultural impositions. The study was done with eight (8) pregnant women. After the data analysis, three important meaning categories were got in this process: Sucking, Family and Job. So, the conclusion was that those women know and value the importance of sucking while they consider the family as a basic support, whose values, faith and the uses are being constructed and transmitted among the generations. Therefore, the health professionals cannot ignore the importance of the family as a determinant and as a facilitator in the maternal lactation process, on the contrary they must know the family context as best as possible.
