Abstract

The aim was to describe the experience of family members of patients attended in an Emergency Unit in Fortaleza-Ceará regarding their collaboration in the activities, and the difficulties experienced. This descriptive study with a qualitative approach was undertaken with 34 family members accompanying patients under observation. The data was collected through interviews with semi-structured scripts in the period October – November 2010, and analysis was carried out in line with thematic content. The results denote shortcomings in learning and information regarding the diagnosis, treatment and care given to the patient. The difficulties experienced refer to communication, infrastructure, privacy, and noise pollution. It is believed that the interdisciplinary team and the directors may be able to remedy the difficulties through administrative, organizational and educational actions.
