A ATUAÇÃO DE RELIGIOSAS EM CURITIBA NA ASSISTÊNCIA AOS ALIENADOS DURANTE A REPÚBLICA VELHA

Resumen

O estudo trata da atuação das religiosas de São José de Moutiers na assistência aos alienados e indigentes na Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Curitiba e posteriormente no Hospício Nossa Senhora da Luz. O método de investigação utilizado é a pesquisa histórica com análise documental dos relatórios de governo da Província, os relatórios da Irmandade de Misericórdia, o contrato firmado entre a congregação religiosa e a provedoria, os periódicos de época como também as Crônicas da Irmandade. A delimitação temporal abrangeu o ano de 1896 que marcou a chegada das religiosas em Curitiba até o ano de 1937 quando faleceu a superiora provincial Madre Léonie Blanchet,período no qual surgiu o primeiro hospital para alienados do Paraná. O cuidar santificado exercido por estas mulheres fazia parte da identidade da religiosa de São José de Môutiers. O modo de ser cuidadora foi construído ao longo do tempo, com a ocupação contínua do espaço e em suas relações cotidianas no ambiente hospitalar. Concluiu-se que a atuação dessas mulheres contribuiu para que se compreenda a história da enfermagem paranaense bem como a história da enfermagem psiquiátrica de nosso Estado.

The work of nuns rendering care for the mentally ill in Curitiba/Brazil during the old republican period

Abstract

This study addresses the work of nuns of São José de Môutiers Order rendering care to mentally ill and needy individuals at Santa Casa de Misericordia, a former nursing home in Curitiba/Brazil and later at Hospício Nossa Senhora da Luz, a mental hospital in Curitiba. The investigative approach used was historical research with the respective document review of reports from the so-called Province government at the time, reports from Misericordia Religious Sisterhood, the agreement between the religious congregation and the purveyor, journals of the period and the Chronicles of the Sisterhood. Time span took up the year of 1896, that is, the nuns arrival in Curitiba until 1937 when Province Mother Superior Léonie Blanchet died, during which the first hospital for mentally-ill individuals was set up in Paraná State. Sanctifying caring delivered by nuns of São José de Môutiers was part of the character of the members of that religious order. Caregiving was shaped along the time, by continuously permeating the hospital settings and also in nuns daily relationships in the hospital environment. It has been concluded that those womens work has contributed for the understanding of nursing history as well as for the understanding of psychiatric nursing history in Paraná State/Brazil.
