Exploratory and qualitative research. The objective was to describe facilities found in the process of
breastfeeding of women who gave birth and took/take care of children with Down syndrome. The subjects were six
women/mothers of children with Down syndrome and were residents in the cities of Rio Negro/PR and Mafra/SC. Data was
collected during the months of July and June 2007, through interviews, and were analyzed using thematic analyses. The
breastfeeding process of these women pointed out the need of special attention of the health services and professionals,
particularly the nursing team. Therefore, these women’s caring process must include competent and sensitive interventions,
from the point of view of both professional action, and the strengthening of women autonomy.
